The Fashion Photographer - Feature Interview: Dominic Clarke

Hello everyone :)

So here is the first interview in my new feature on the fashion photographer, i have alot of amazing photographers lined up and am starting with Dominic Clarke, an amazing photographer based in London.

It's a fairly brief interview but Dominic has alot of work on at the moment, i hope you enjoy his work though and do check him out.

1. Fill me in on your background, where are you from and how did you get in to photography?

London... I was always Interested in messing around with pictures, drawn, painted etc


2. Who has influenced you the most in terms of photography?

I think Sarah moon just about wins as my biggest influence.

3. What is your favourate style of photography (Self portraiture? Fashion? Documentary)?

That stuff that is kind of half way between fashion photography and a lifestyle portrait... but on second thought it might just be fashion photography, It goes back and fourth.

4. What is your process when taking photo's, from getting ideas to editing?

It probably starts with a mood or atmosphere.

5. What are your tools of the trade?

Different cameras so I can have a bit of freedom. all lenses are 50mm.. one is 45mm.


6. Where do you hope to go with your photography?

Published in print is nice because people can hold my images in theirs hands.


7. Why do you think people are drawn to fashion photography and editorials?

People are drawn to pages of images that are all about style and taste.


8. On your Flickr it seems like you focus on one shot at a time, do you do series and not put them up or do you prefer to focus on one fashion shot at a time?

Oh they're mostly in series but I'm a bit lazy with my own flickr... I'd rather look at others.


9. Who are some other fashion photographers you admire?

Paolo Roversi, Tim Walker, I have been loving Lina Scheynius's stuff this year, Marlene Marino,Juergen Teller, Mariano Vivanco.


10. What is your best tip to taking a striking fashion portrait?

Hhmmmmmmmm

11. Your photos seem to be of mostly women, why do you find women more interesting to photograph?

When I started studying art when I was young it was all about images of women.


12. Who has been your biggest influence in your photography work and where do you look for inspiration for your work?

I think I mix different influence into my work, from Toshihiro Oshima to Lina Scheynius.

13. What is your favourite fashion shot you have taken? (Link and describe why)

It was the beginning of fashion photography for me, was a lovely shoot too.

14. What are some of you favourite films, books and musicians?

14.2046, the crow, garden state, catcher in the rye, coincidences by sarah moon, glassjaw, foals, deftones, tool.

15. What has been your biggest achievement so far with your photography?

The relationships with the people I've collaborated with.

16. Do you think its hard to be original in fashion? How do you keep your ideas original and fresh?

I think that as long as there is a good exploration or creativity in the work then you don't need to worry about being original.

17. Which fashion photographer do you think i should interview next and why?

Any of the photographers that I mentioned above.

18. Do you often change alot of the original photo in photoshop?

Sometimes I shoot in a neutral way so that I can edit a lot, but my last shoot didn't need any thing done to the pictures.. just a little less colour saturation.

19. Do you think you have an original style that is you own?

People say I have one, but most of them are friends haha.

20. Give us the skinny, what's the next big project you've got coming up?

A book and a show in Brick lane in June.


21. Which actor would play you in the film of your life?

Me and the supporting role will be Gemma Ward.


22. What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?

A footballer, then lawyer, then artist.
